January 27/ January 28, 2011

The first day in Spain! Needless to say, it was a VERY long day! Our flight left at 6:35 p.m. from Philadelohia and we arrived in Madrid in about 6.5 hrs. Even thought our flights were moved around, finding luggage at 7 a.m. or so wasn’t so bad! And even thought it was a rainy day, we all were grateful to be where we were supposed to. After locating my luggage, which was red but is now mostly black (sorry, Dad) we hopped on a bus and started our hour drive to Segovia. I’m pretty sure we all fell asleep on the bus, Segovia was cold and many areas in Spain got lots of snow today which was a little rare.

After getting off the bus in Segovia, we were greeted by our señoras. I was nervous because I was by myself (my roommate, Teah, is still stuck in Indianapolis) but I survived and she was very welcoming. She asked where I had slept and I told her on the plane so she gave me some water and an orange and let me go to sleep. I was very grateful for this but sleeping wasn’t easy. The room here, that my roommate and I will share is very small and cold. (And with only one outlet...maybe us Americans take out access to electricity for granted...heat too because all we have here are gas space heaters and I’m pretty sure the one is our room isn’t working) Anyway, after my nap, my señora wanted to serve me lunch which was pasta with a tomato sauce and ham as well as a breaded chicken breast. I really wasn’t overly hungry (if you know me well, you know my stomach and I rarely get along) but I ate to tide me over and it really wasn’t bad food either. Then after lunch, we met the entire group by the aqueduct at 5:30. We walked around the city of Segovia. Many 15th century buildings and churches were pointed out to us and we saw where we would be having class (The Center...we call it) Here, we got maps, asked questions, got our class schedule, and just hung out to get in from the rain/snow that was falling from the sky. This part was overwhelming to me, I felt a little lost but now I know that this is normal for the first week or so. Truth is, I do miss home..along with everyone there but I know I’ll get used to it here and have plenty to do. I just have to take it one day at a time and keep an open mind to learn (Thanks, Mom). I am excited to Skype with people next week though and to see some familiar faces. Classes start on Monday and I’m hoping a routine will be excellent for me. I know I’m in good hands and everything will get easier with time. I’m off to Madrid tomorrow with the group so I’m off to bed! [Oh! And if you’re curious about dinner I had boiled potatoes in a bed of entirely too much salt :P and tortilla Francesa, which was basically an omelet with cheese in the middle.]
